Experiments of speed - 6 years ago

Statistics of my personal wheel testing of more than 150 runs down a 20 % steep straight with a bend and an uphill corner.

In addition to a selection of green wheels, a few different boards, helmets and suits were compared in series of at least ten runs per setup.

The skate season is about to kick off in Switzerland. This one is for locals and all skate tourists: Respect the laws please! Everyone rides mountain passes, most of them are forbidden. Be smart and ride early in the morning.

And here are the most important regulations for skateboarding on Swiss roads in a print ready PDF:

Allaroundskate.com interview

The website doesn't exist anymore, so nothing more to read unfortunately...

(01. February 2014) This is some information on my recent move away from Airflow Skateboards: End of January I moved into a new apartment in Liestal, the town where I grew up. I'm now living at the bottom of a hill where I basically started to ride nearly 20 years ago. I remember how I walked up that hill at night and dropped in from a bit higher up every run. It was very exciting. Then there was a 12 storey parking lot with an elevator where I did countless runs, all night long. Shortly after my first skateboard race in 1999, I connected with the people at Airflow Skateboards. I started riding their boards and we skated down hills and had a weekly slalom training in Zürich. We became friends. The Airflow team attended slalom races all across Europe, some of the team had the need for speed and concentrated on downhill racing. My focus was on racing, always! I wanted to get faster and faster. With the help of Chris Hart at Airflow Skateboards, I started to develop downhill boards, which for a long time had nearly no concave. I always had a fascination for making things: My dad is a master carpenter. My grandfather as well, and he had his own carpentry shop in the old town of Liestal. Spending a lot of time with Airflow in Zürich, I got introduced to a industrial design company which has an office in the same building, one floor below the Airflow shop. Pretty soon I knew I wanted to become an industrial designer.

After finishing my industrial design studies in 2009 I got a job as a climbing wall designer in Malaysia. The things I discovered in that time lead to a digital workflow, which I found out is very useful to design veneer plywood longboards. Living in Kuala Lumpur gave me a headache everyday, so I came back to Switzerland after 11 months.

Back in Liestal, I had a hard time finding work and got frustrated. With the release of the Fuse in 2012, I spent much time riding pre-production prototypes and got amped for an other Eurotour. For a few reasons, my 2012 season was very disappointing. I got tired of having to deal with the same issues year after year and stopped competing after 10 years of worldwide racing. A job at a design company made me move to Zürich. Unfortunately that wasn't much of product design. It was more about tinkering, model-building and wasting time with failing crack software. With no other job in sight, I started an employment at Airflow Skateboards in fall 2012. Everything went great for a while but then we ran into the issues over and over again. Early 2013 I got approached from other board manufacturers who asked if I could design their molds. From that moment on I was in a conflict with Airflow. A year has gone by since I stopped working for Airflow Skateboards.

I decided to pursue my professional career. Martin Siegrist Industrial Design is growing slowly: I design helmets, boards and special grips for climbing walls. A few months ago I started a new job in the timber industry, developing digital workflows for the production of complicated timber geometry.

For the last 15 years, Airflow Skateboards has been more than just my sponsor. It became a big part of mine and a lot of people not only in the longboard community associate Airflow with my name. In the last couple months, I realized that in order to continue working as an independent product designer, I need to be free. That's why I quit Airflow Skateboards.

I'd like to thank Chris Hart and Airflow Skateboards for everything that happened in the last 15 years. It's been an incredible time! Chris, I wish you, your family and your business a bright future full of positive energy.

After a decade of competing all around the world I finally quit from downhill skateboard racing.

I want to thank my family, sponsors, friends and everyone else who has helped me achieve my goals! It was a crazy experience!

Airflow Fuse dominates Flughafenderby

Only released this Friday, the new Airflow Fuse already won its first race.

After a relatively easy qualification, Chris Hart and myself made it to the final, together with Christoph Haller and Felix Druschel. The final was a nice clean run; I was on third spot through the first chicane then had to give Christophe a bit of a push. Passed Chris into the first corner and then started pumping to attack Christoph. After the second chicane I was able to take over the lead, pumping my Fuse with Magun trucks!

Cameron Highlands...

... or should I rather say Cameron Highways? In any case, malay streetluger Abdil Madhzan and I had some fun riding straightish fast 10% roads.

Malaysia's fastest hill might be up there; I hope it's not the case and I'll continue the search!

EuroTrip 2010

I'm in Europe for 1 month and I'll be racing the Euro Champs in Insul this weekend, Kozakov World Cup mid August and then a crazy invitational race in the lugetrack in Altenberg, Germany. There are two things to defend, my European Champion title and the victory at Kozakov. With all the work back in Malaysia, time for skateboarding and general work out was rare... let's see how it goes...

I'm traveling in Patrick Switzer's (CAN) car together with John Barnet (CAN) and Ramón Königshausen (SUI).

Thanks to my sponsors Abec11 and Airflow Skateboards for making this trip possible.

The World Champion Club

These are the IGSA World Champions of the last 8 years. Can you name all of them? Will there be a new face joining the Club this weekend?

PS: For the first time in my career, I'm not racing at the World Championships... I'm too busy with work at BLOCX in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. We design and build state of the art climbing walls and cave systems.

IGSA 2010 event guide

My profile... Actually it's my 8th year! The Swiss World Cup in Altbüron 2002 was my premier, then I went straight to Hotheels in Austria where I placed 5th in the timetrials. The race got rained out, so I ended up on the 5th place which was of course a huge motivation for the following year!

Abec11 2010 team

The Abec11 team has grown quite a bit and is now stronger than ever! I'm proud to ride for the wheel company with the most diverse lineup of wheels ever!

Can it get any better?

Two lanes, one way downhill, 7km, massive speedbumps at 60 km/h.... This is where a skateboard beats every car!

Thanks to Sam for driving! I guess he killed his brakes that day!

Genting - one way love

Found a sick slide spot at Genting Highlands, high above Kuala Lumpur. It's a barely used link from a parking lot back to the main road, supersteep and a bit bumpy in some places... Quite a challenge for sure!

Wang Kelian - Malaysia

Besides a whole lot of green wheels, my Tag Heuer speedtrap and a speedsuit were packed in my bags, ready for high speed.

However, the road in Wang Kelian turned out to be more of a freeride spot with fantastic hairpins and a roller coaster like section. If you want a comparison to some well known racetracks, then it would be Col d' Izoard mixed with some Kozakov, and a Jungholz Almabtrieb chicane that drops like the dipper at Mt. Panorama....

The last straight is above 100 for streetluger Abdil Mahdzan, my highest GPS speed was around 95 km/h. Due to that, we decided not to set up the speedtrap.

Thanks to Abdil Mahdzan and his dad for the nice weekend and Loren Guevara for taking pictures and being our driver.

A video is available either on the Airflow Skateboards youtube channel or right here in the media section.

Airflow Skateboards 2010

I'm proud to finally show our new freerider, the «Fast and Furious» and new color versions of my updated promodel in wood, carbon and glass fibre. Both boards feature specifically designed concaves! The «Fast and Furious» has a 3D concave to lock your feet in place. The board features a concave middle section with raised edges and slight negative camber, also known as rocker. The Martin Siegrist Pro Model comes with a flat middle section and super direct raised edges, now for the first time on the entire length of the standing platform.

Thanks to Chris Hart for making these boards and his wife Pia for creating awesome graphics!

Malaysia's fastest hill? Trial #1

Wow that hill looks pretty sweet! There are even a bunch of hairpins! And a super fast straight at the end. I'll be riding it really soon, despite the fact that it's way up north! Stoked...

Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

On April 12th 2010, I moved to Malaysia with 140 kg of luggage including 6 skateboards, 50 sets of wheels, a mountainbike, 4 helmets, a speedtrap, a bunch of shoes and clothes...

Reason for coming here is a industrial design job at Blocx - my job is the development of climbing walls and related accessories in 3d...

In contrast to most peoples believe, Malaysia is not a country of the 3rd world, yes, roads are paved, often smoothly! Stay tuned, I'll show you...

In the meantime, you can read an article on the malaysian longboard scene, published a while ago on different skate websites.

Swiss Precision Speed Trap

This speed trap is approved with speeds above 200 km/h! Not on a skateboard but on a pair of skis.... by my long time helmet sponsor Beat Engel...

The search for Malaysias fastest hill can begin!

Airflow Speedwing 39"

The latest board from Airflow Skateboards features a super thick foamcore and fresh looking fluorescent green ABS edges. The speedwing measures 99cm in length and 25cm in width. For me it's the first try, having Magun trucks on a topmount board. Let's see how that goes...

edit: having ridden drop-through boards for the last seven years, the speedwing feels way too high!

EuroTour 2009 with Daihatsu

New stuff for the Worlds

My new board rides exactly the same as my old carbon board. But the cutouts are a little bit bigger to fit Abec 11's widest wheel: «Momos»!

The new Beat Engel speedhelmet has my small helmet built in to be as safe as possible. For the first time ever we use a huge 3D visor for a speedhelmet!

These will be my two jokers for the World Championships at Maryhill.

On his downhill skateboard trip through Europe, Mischo Erban from BC Canada has stopped at my place in Liestal. We got to skate some of the best roads here and there...

Now we're ready for the World Championship!

BigZigs have arrived in Switzerland

It's the widest wheel in the Abec11/Retro family. Having a sideset core and sharp lips, BigZigs grip like nothing else. The reflex urethane is really fast and rolls smoothly even on rough tar. And when loosing grip, the firmer duros drift quite predictably.

What more do you want?

The sun was shining and many people came to the Airflow Slalom Brunch in Thalwil. The track is really smooth and hasn't much of a slope. The race was held on two different courses. As usual it required alot of strength pushing all the way to the finish. I rode my Ramón Königshausen Promodel and got 3rd. Chris Hart won against Ramòn. Airflow has made the triple podium.

Many thanks to Chris and Puli for the race and thanks to Johnny for the pictures.

Racing against Chris in the quarter final.

Magun, Frank and I finally made the short trip to the Mont Ventoux in France. The mistral was blowing, luckily as a strong tail wind. The mission was clear: how fast can you go? For me it was the first time on the hill since two years. Run after run I got faster, finally reaching 109km/h. Riding at such high speeds is really impressive and one of the best feelings ever!

Until now the winter has been really nice to us. While some people miss the snow, I enjoy skateboarding!

Unusual for January all the roads are dry! This is an exception and you need to make use of it! Downhill speed - freeride - all day long - and at night we session the parking lot. Grab your skateboard! Come out and play!

To celebrate my victory at the Downhill Skateboard World Championships, the local skate and snowboard shop 'Boardshop' has its shop window decorated with some of my stuff.

Tobias Valentin, the owner of the shop, was an early skateboarder in the 80ies. He lived only a few houses away from where i grew up.

And he is definitely one of the guys who infected me with the skateboard virus back then. It must have been around 1986 when he took me down a hill on his board.

Soon I got my first board - from my parents. It was a narrow glassfibre board without any griptape. About a year later Tobi gave me one of his old boards, a flat 'Tox' street skateboard with green and black wheels. Too bad i threw it away in the 90ies...

IGSA Downhill World Championships 2006

Chill on a Swiss Hill

This is my all new Airflow downhill skateboard. Chris and I finished it just on time. Right before COASH! The new board is 0.5kg lighter than my previous board. Now the cutouts match even better with the trucks. A slightly kinked foamcore increases the stability of the lips and makes the stearing more precise. Set up with #5 Magun trucks, Abec11 Flywheels and Edger griptape it's the ultimate race machine!

The brand new Reflex urethane guarantees for more grip and increased roll speed.

Abec11 offers the biggest and best range of wheels - skateboard wheels made by a skateboarder! Downhill, slalom, carve, slide, pool, parks ... for boys and girls! What more do you need?

Here it is - the new Magun truck!

This is already the fifth production. You most probably can't see the changings, but there really are some relevant improvements. And still you can mount an old hanger on your new baseplate if necessary. The hanger with is now 200mm wide - including washers. With a smart construction detail the kingpin is guided a little bit more and the fit is much tighter - this eliminates the well known freeplay of Magun trucks. Nice guys might get the limited chrome steel bushing cap. Unfortunately Magun only produced 15 sets. Most of them are sold. So better order quickly.

Wide shape, big tail, short nose...

This is my new Airflow Street- Slide- Carve- and Pool-Skateboard. I love doing kickturns so i mounted a massiv skidplate at the tail. Tracker 129's and Retro Vertz 65mm 95A. Skate and create!

South Africa 2005!

The story of the messed up World Cup Final!

This is my new Beat Engel Speeddesign helmet. I got it the day before I left for South Africa.

Originally made for speedskiing, these helmets do really work nicely for speed skateboarding too! Watch out for green and red helmets next year!

Gimme gimme dry roads please!

Teutônia Downhill Speed 2005!

Highspeed Skateboarding!!!

Riding Bukit Tinggi is really one of the best things to do! 6.35km - 6min 40sec - 85km/h topspeed - 57km/h average speed...

Elbo Skatepark Bologna (Italy)

On monday 25th and tuesday 26th of July 2005 the Italian railway personnel striked. Nevertheless I went to Italy. I hitchhiked from Chiasso to Bologna in the middle of the night. And the next morning I was there, right in front of the park. Whenever Dreamland builds a park you know it's something big! The Elbo Skatepark in Bologna is totally rad: 3.60m deep end, 4.00m 70ƒ bank, conical fullpipe, 3.60m extension with pool coping, oververt pocket, 6 hips, 2.40m average height... Drop in from the wallride and roll over the fullpipe - bang! Push, push, push. Catch some air, carve through the oververt pocket and then ride full speed through the fullpipe, deep end, slide - chchchch - gnarly! This park is amazing!
