Meiringen Boulder World Cup Wall

In 2017 I got the chance to develop and design a modular competition wall for the Meiringen Boulder World Cup and the National Training Center of the Swiss Alpine Club.

The simple design offers maximum freedom for the setters, allowing the placement of big features and volumes. The sectors of the wall are large enough to set two nearly identical boulders side to side which is important during qualification of World Cups.

Six elements fit nicely into the tennis hall in Meiringen. The modular design can be extended and the elements can be assembled in many other ways.

The wall is composed of six elements which itself are split into four vertical parts. Attached to a hinge at the bottom of the wall, each part is hoisted into its final position and secured to a scaffolding or steel structure. The wall can be set up and dismantled in a day.

Based on my design, Blocform has manufactured a total of eight elements.

To quickly explore different assemblies, I printed the elements of the wall at scale 1:105 which results in blocks a bit smaller than 5 x 5 centimeters. The back and underside of the prints are perforated with a LEGO hole pattern so an assembly can be kept in place on a LEGO platform.

Setup of the Meiringen World Cup wall at the 2023 World Championships in Bern. The wall was extended on both sides and was used for all qualification rounds.
